Legal Status

The American Chamber of Commerce in Vietnam (AmCham Vietnam) was rre-established informally by American business representatives on March 10, 1994, about one month after President Bill Clinton lifted the U.S. embargo on trade with Vietnam on February 3, 1994.

Since 1996, AmCham Vietnam in HCM City has been a Member of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, which represents 3,000,000 businesses, 2,800 state and local chambers, 830 business associations, and 102 American Chambers of Commerce in 82 countries. Only members of the Chamber of Commerce of the USA ® may display the “MEMBER 2005 U.S. Chamber of Commerce” websticker.

On January 22, 1998, the DECREE OF THE GOVERNMENT Promulgating the Regulations on the Establishment of Foreign Business Associations in Vietnam, Decree No. 08/1998/ND-CP, dated 22 January 1998, was issued.

On September 19, 1998, based on an application submitted by the Board of Governors, AmCham Vietnam was officially recognized by the receipt of a “License for the Establishment of a Foreign Business Association in Vietnam,” No.-02/GP/HHND/HCM from the People’s Committee of Ho Chi Minh City. On September 17, 2003, an Extension of License was received, valid for a period of three years, based on Article 6 of Decree No. 08. On August 17, 2006, another License Extension was received, valid until September 19, 2009, and we expect that it will be continually renewed in the future.
