You may not know that…

• Every 02 seconds there is 01 person who needs blood for treatment.
• Every time of blood donation 03 lives are saved.
• Tet Holiday is the occasion of the highest demand for blood.

As predicted by the National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion, during the Lunar New Year, the whole country needs about 125,000 units of blood to serve the treatment of disease. However, due to the long time off, the major groups of faithful blood donors, white-collar workers and students from universities are leaving for Tet holidays, which results in the supply of blood products has decreased considerably.

Additionally, as reported by the General Statistics Office Of Viet Nam, in 2017, in the whole country occurred 20,010 traffic accidents which killed 8,279 people and injured nearly 19,000 people. Besides, in addition to routine treatments, patients who have appointments scheduled at exactly the New Year holidays will visit sooner; inpatients will be considered for blood transfusion (if required) for their leaving for hometown during Tet holidays. Thus the need for blood donation within a month prior to Tet will be significantly increased for reserving for blood supplies in the week prior to, during and after Tet.

According to reports from the National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion, the scarcity of blood is occurring especially in the blood group O when only about 1200 units are available as of January 4, 2018, which only sufficient to supply within 2 days. Moreover, every year, more than 1 million units of blood are donated. However, blood supplies satisfy only about 60% of the nationwide need.

For those reasons, The AmCham CSR Group is now working with the Hospital of Hematology and Blood Transfusion (BTH) to organize Blood Donor Campaigns that will proceed in spring and summer. The New Year Campaign with the message “Blood Donation Spring. Loving Acts Spreading” is an event in the chain of AmCham CSR activities. It focuses on the availability and willingness to donate of voluntary blood donors when it comes to high season of blood shortage like Tet Festival. Furthermore, it strongly encourages people to be a friend indeed of others and appreciate the spirit of giving back to the society.

Note: In case you wish you to donate at 11:00 AM or 4:00 PM, you should present at the hospital at least 30 minutes before donating.

Tet Holiday brings so many joys and happiness. Yet it is also a challenging time for organizing voluntary blood donation activities in Vietnam and Ho Chi Minh City. Therefore, let’s make happiness truly complete by doing meaningful things together and bringing happiness to those around us.
